A Windblown Dry Lake Beds Wedding Full of Desert Light and Real Emotion
Wind was whipping across the playa, Katherine’s hair was flying everywhere, and Adam couldn’t stop grinning. That’s the image we keep coming back to from this Dry Lake Beds wedding. Not the perfectly composed arch shot (although we got that too). It’s the raw, unscripted, wildly romantic stuff that happens when two people decide to get married in the middle of the Nevada desert and just let it rip.
Details, Getting Ready, and That Quiet Energy Before the Desert
Adam and Katherine got ready separately at their hotel. The contrast between those two rooms told us a lot about the day ahead. Katherine’s side was all lace, soft pink florals, rose petals scattered around the invitation suite, a jade rosary draped carefully beside family photo charms. Every detail felt personal and intentional. Her bridesmaids helped her into a stunning Lillian West gown with an illusion neckline. There was this beautiful moment where she looked down, adjusting her shoes, smiling to herself. Those quiet, unguarded seconds are gold.
Over in Adam’s room, the energy was different but just as real. His dad helped him with his jacket, and the two of them shared a look by the window that needed no words. A “Forever in my Heart” memorial keychain hung near his suit. That kind of detail tells you something about who these people are. It reminded us why we always show up early enough to find these moments.
A Ceremony on the Open Playa
If you’ve never been to the Dry Lake Beds outside Boulder City, picture this: flat, cracked earth stretching to the horizon, mountains ringing the edges, nothing between you and the sky. It’s the kind of landscape that makes a small ceremony feel enormous. Adam and Katherine set up a gorgeous triangular wooden arch adorned with pampas grass, blush roses, and eucalyptus. Their kids stood right beside them. Meanwhile, the officiant read from a book while the wind tried its best to steal every page.
Photographically, this location is a dream and a challenge at the same time. No shade, no walls, nothing to block the elements. But honestly? That’s what made it. Katherine’s veil caught the gusts like a sail. The kids’ hair was going sideways, and everyone was laughing through it. We shot wide to show the scale of that landscape, then pulled in tight for the vows. If you’re considering a Nevada desert wedding, know that the wind is part of the deal. It makes everything better.
Golden Hour Portraits That Wrote Themselves
After the ceremony, we had maybe forty minutes of perfect golden light. The sun dropped toward the mountains and turned the whole playa this warm, dusty amber. Adam and Katherine were completely relaxed by this point, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No posing prompts needed. They just held each other and let the wind do the rest.
One of our favorite frames is the wide pullback where they’re standing alone on the cracked earth with mountains behind them. It almost looks like another planet. Then there’s the overhead shot on the colorful patchwork blanket, Adam kissing Katherine’s forehead while she smiles with her eyes closed. Pure tenderness. These Dry Lake Beds wedding photos remind us why we travel for the right couple and the right light.
From there, the celebration moved to Fogo de Chao for dinner and cake. A three-tier naked cake topped with blush roses was almost too pretty to cut. Almost. The evening wound down with the two of them stealing one last kiss beside it. We packed up knowing this gallery was going to be something special.

What makes the Dry Lake Beds a great location for wedding photos?
The Dry Lake Beds near Boulder City offer a minimalist, otherworldly landscape that puts all the focus on the couple. Cracked earth creates incredible texture in every frame, and the unobstructed horizon means sunset light wraps around you from every angle. As photographers, we love that there’s nothing competing for attention. It’s just you, the desert, and the mountains.
How do you handle wind and sun during a desert wedding?
Wind is part of the experience out here, and we lean into it. It adds movement to dresses, veils, and hair that you simply can’t recreate. For bright sun, we time portraits during golden hour when the light turns soft and warm. Planning your ceremony for late afternoon gives you the best of both worlds: ceremony light that isn’t harsh, followed by portrait light that’s pure magic.
