Pure Joy in Every Frame: Sunset Fall Family Session
October light makes everything feel warmer. This sunset fall family session at Lake Kegonsa State Park was proof. The trees were at peak color, the sun sat low and golden, and this family showed up ready to just be together. That combination is everything we could ask for.
Fall Light and Real Connection
We always tell families the same thing: play, laugh, tickle, chase. The more natural the interaction, the better the photos. Posed and stiff is not what we’re after. Lake Kegonsa gave us wide open trails and a canopy of red and gold overhead. The kids had room to run without anyone worrying. We shot wide through most of the session to pull in all that color, and the results speak for themselves.
What we love about family photos is the stuff between the poses. A toddler reaching for a parent’s hand. Siblings leaning into each other without thinking about it. Those connections are what make the images worth hanging on the wall. Fall light makes all of it feel even more intimate. We pulled in close for a few quiet moments, and those ended up being some of our favorites from the evening.
Fall is our busiest season for a reason. The colors do half the work. October light is the warmest, most flattering light of the year. If you’re considering a sunset fall family session at Lake Kegonsa or any of our favorite spots near Madison, plan early. The peak color window is short, and it fills up fast.
When is the best time for fall family photos at Lake Kegonsa State Park?
Mid to late October usually hits the sweet spot for peak color. We recommend booking about an hour before sunset for that warm golden light. The window is short, so reaching out early gives you the best chance at the dates you want.
