Stories Worth Telling: An Alaskan Wilderness Family Session

The kids were barefoot within five minutes. That’s usually a good sign. This Alaskan wilderness family session near Anchorage gave us the kind of scale you just can’t find in the lower 48. Snow-capped peaks in every direction. Wildflower fields stretching to the horizon. Summer light that hung around like it had nowhere else to be. We met this crew near Flattop Mountain, and from the first frame, we knew the evening was going to be special.

When the Landscape Does Half the Work

There’s a thing that happens when you put a family in a place this wide open. The posing falls away. Kids run. Parents exhale. Everyone stops thinking about the camera and just exists. Alaska amplified that by about a thousand. The tundra, the rivers, the mountains, it all gave this family permission to play. We shot through every bit of it.

We pulled in tight for the quiet stuff. A daughter leaning into her dad. Siblings crouched by the river poking at rocks. Then we’d swing wide and let the landscape swallow the frame. That push and pull between intimate and epic is what made this gallery so fun to build. If you’re considering family photography somewhere wild and wide open, this is what it can look like.

Golden hour in Anchorage during August is generous. The light just keeps giving. It wraps around everything warm and low, and the colors shift every ten minutes. We chased it across open fields, down to the riverbank, and back up to a sandy flat. The whole family piled together with the peaks towering behind them. That kind of connection in front of that kind of backdrop is something we live for.

Late June through mid-August gives you the longest light and the most wildflowers. The sun stays low and warm for hours each evening, so golden hour lasts far longer than in the lower 48. We recommend scheduling for early evening to take full advantage.
