Outdoor Newborn Photo Session: Schuster’s Farm

A rusty Chevy truck, a field of zinnias at peak bloom, and a brand new baby. That’s the kind of combination that makes an outdoor newborn photo session feel like something out of a painting. This family showed up to Schuster’s Farm in Deerfield ready to let the evening unfold, and we loved every single frame that came out of it.

Zinnias, Golden Light, and a Tiny New Human

We’ve shot at Schuster’s Farm before, and we have a thing for this place. It’s not manicured. It’s not staged. The zinnia fields grow wild and bright, and depending on the week you show up, the palette shifts completely. This family timed it perfectly. Pinks, oranges, deep reds in every direction. We barely had to think about composition because the landscape was doing the heavy lifting.

Taking a newborn outdoors requires patience and flexibility. We follow the baby’s lead on timing, build in space for feeding and settling, and keep the whole session loose. That slower pace actually does something wonderful for parents, too. When nobody is rushing, when the evening air is warm and the light is soft, everyone exhales. And that calm is what we’re after. It shows up in the photos as real connection rather than posed smiles.

The moment that stopped us was the big sister leaning in to kiss her new sibling. Nobody asked her to do it. She just did, and we pulled in close. That’s the kind of image you can’t plan for, and honestly, those unscripted seconds are the reason we love outdoor newborn photography in settings like this. The curly-haired toddler picking zinnias by the truck wasn’t bad either.

If you’re thinking about a newborn session that feels like real life rather than a studio setup, a spot like Schuster’s Farm is worth considering. The bloom window is short, so planning ahead matters. We’d love to help you time it right. You can see more of our work on our newborn and maternity photography page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Newborn Sessions at Schuster’s Farm

When is the best time for an outdoor newborn session at Schuster’s Farm?

The zinnia fields at Schuster’s Farm typically peak in mid to late summer, and the window is only a few weeks. We recommend reaching out early in your pregnancy so we can plan around both the bloom and your due date. Golden hour sessions in the evening give us the warmest light.

How do you keep a newborn comfortable during an outdoor photo session?

We build extra time into every outdoor newborn session for feeding, settling, and shade breaks. The baby sets the pace, not us. We also choose evenings when temperatures are mild and bring soft wraps and props that keep your little one cozy throughout the session.
