Laughter and Golden Hour: An Urban Wildflower Family Session
Late summer light and a field full of wildflowers right behind Garver Feed Mill. That was the setting for this urban wildflower family session, and honestly, it felt like someone designed a backdrop specifically for this family. The teal dress, the golden field, the toddler who wanted to run everywhere. We were into all of it.
The In-Between Moments
Here’s what we love about shooting families with toddlers: nothing goes according to plan, and that’s the whole point. This little guy wanted to crawl through the flowers, sprint across the meadow, and test every boundary his parents set. We followed him. The camera followed us. And we ended up with a gallery full of real life instead of stiff poses.
That double-cheek kiss? We didn’t direct it. Parents just do that, and our job is to be ready when it happens. We pulled in close for this one because the expressions told the whole story.
Then there are the solo moments. A curly-haired kid standing in the middle of a meadow, glancing back at us with that look toddlers give when they know they’re being watched. We shot wide to let the landscape do the talking. That one frame says more about who he is right now than any posed portrait could.
The wildflower field behind Garver is one of those spots we come back to because the light is consistently beautiful in late summer. If you’re considering family photography in Madison, this is a location worth knowing about. It’s urban enough to be convenient, wild enough to feel like you left the city.
This family was completely relaxed, and that is when we do our best work. No agenda, no rushing. Just a family being a family while the light turned everything gold. These are the sessions we think about long after the gallery is delivered.
When is the best time of year for family photos at Garver Feed Mill?
Late summer through early fall is our favorite window. The wildflower field behind the building peaks around August and September, and golden hour light at that time of year is warm and forgiving. Spring sessions work well too, but the meadow really comes alive in late summer.
