Running Wild: A Family with Dog Session
Golden hour light, a stone garden path, a baby girl learning to crawl, and a golden retriever who kept stealing the show. This family with dog session at Mellon Park Walled Garden in Pittsburgh had all the ingredients for a gallery we couldn’t stop smiling through.
Let the Dog Steal a Few Frames
We tell every family the same thing: bring the dog. Seriously. Pets change the energy of a session in the best way. The kids relax because the dog is there, the parents relax because the kids are happy, and we get genuine laughter instead of stiff smiles. This crew proved that theory ten times over.
Mellon Park’s Walled Garden is one of those locations that does a lot of the heavy lifting for us. Stone pathways, ivy-covered brick walls, benches with character. We shot wide to let the architecture frame the family, then pulled in tight for the quieter moments between parents and baby. The garden gave us variety without ever having to leave a single courtyard.
If you’re looking for a Pittsburgh location that feels tucked away but photographs beautifully, this is the one. The light filters through just right in the late afternoon, and the enclosed walls give you privacy that open parks can’t match.
Our favorite part of this session was how natural everything felt. Nobody was performing. Dad was making the baby laugh. Mom was keeping one eye on the retriever. The dog was living its best life. That kind of beautiful chaos is exactly where we do our best work. We just stayed ready and let it unfold.

Can I bring my dog to a family photo session at Mellon Park?
Absolutely. Mellon Park Walled Garden is pet-friendly, and we love including dogs in family sessions. Pets add personality and help everyone relax. Just bring a leash and a favorite treat, and we’ll work the pup into the portraits naturally.
