Split Oak Forest Fall Family: Sandy Trails and Golden Light

Four girls, two parents, and the kind of energy that keeps you on your toes for an entire session. That’s what we walked into for this Split Oak Forest fall family shoot near Orlando, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way. The Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area gave us ancient oaks, palmetto-lined trails, and low autumn light that turned everything it touched warm and soft.

Letting Kids Lead the Way

We always tell families the same thing: just be yourselves. Run, laugh, chase each other down the trail. The best frames happen when nobody is thinking about us. These girls took that to heart. They explored every sandy path, leaned into each other constantly, and kept their parents cracking up the entire time. We pulled in tight for those candid reactions because that is where the real personality lives.

Central Florida in the fall has this quality of light that we chase every chance we get. The canopy at Split Oak opens up in spots, and golden hour pours through in pools along the ground. It wraps around people without any help from us. We shot wide to let the landscape do its thing, then moved in close for the quieter moments between parents.

A preserve like this adds something you can’t manufacture. The trails feel untouched. The textures are wild. Sandy dirt, rough bark, green palmetto fronds catching the last warm light. That contrast between a polished family and raw Florida wilderness? That’s the kind of thing we live for behind the camera. If you’re considering fall family portraits somewhere outside the usual park setting, a place like Split Oak should be on your list.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Photography at Split Oak Forest

When is the best time of year for family photos at Split Oak Forest?

Fall and early winter are ideal. The temperatures cool down, the light stays golden longer into the afternoon, and the trails are comfortable for kids. We recommend booking about an hour before sunset so we can take full advantage of that warm, low Florida light.
