Warmth and Wonder: A Fall Mini Family Session
Golden hour hit just right for this fall mini family session, and everything about the evening felt warm. The light was low and amber, pampas grass caught the breeze, and these three kids brought enough energy to keep us on our toes the entire time.
Let the Kids Lead
There was a vintage greenhouse tucked into the backyard, a field full of wildflowers, and an old truck rusting in the most photogenic way possible. We didn’t need much else. The property gave us variety without ever having to leave, and the kids took full advantage of every corner of it.
One of our favorite things about shooting families is watching the little ones forget the camera exists. The oldest picked wildflowers. The toddler with pigtails held them up like a trophy, grinning so hard her eyes nearly disappeared. Their brother just wanted to be held by Mom. All of it was real, and all of it made for images we love.
We pulled the whole family together on a fallen log for a few group shots, and the laughter was instant. No one had to be told to smile. That’s always the goal: get people close, give them something to do, and let the moment happen on its own. We leaned into a wider frame here to capture the full scene, the fall color, the light, all five of them tangled up together.
This is the kind of session we live for. No pressure, no rigid posing, just a family hanging out in their own space while we chase the light. If you’re looking for Madison family portraits that actually feel like your life, that’s exactly what we’re here for. And honestly, a backyard with this much character is hard to beat.
We wrapped the session as the sun dropped behind the trees, and everything went soft and golden. Mom scooped up the little guy, Dad leaned in, and the girls ran ahead holding hands. That last stretch of light gave us some of our favorite frames of the night. We shoot a lot of families at places like Garver Feed Mill, where our studio is based, but sessions like this remind us that sometimes the best backdrop is the one right outside your door. Our fall sessions book quickly for a reason.
Can I do a fall mini family session at my own home?
Absolutely. If your property has good light and a little space to move around, a backyard session can be just as beautiful as any park. We’ll work with what you have, and you’d be surprised how much character a familiar setting brings to the photos.
When should I book a fall family session with Twig & Olive?
Peak fall color in the Madison area typically hits mid-October through early November, and those weeks fill up fast. We recommend reaching out by late summer to secure your preferred date. Get in touch here to start planning.
