At Home with a New Baby: A Lifestyle Newborn Session in Wellesley
Five kids, one brand-new baby, and a house so full of warmth we barely needed to direct a thing. This lifestyle newborn session in Wellesley, Massachusetts is the kind of morning that reminds us why we travel for families. No studio backdrop, no set. Just real life unfolding in the best possible light.
Following the Light Through Every Room
In-home newborn photography is all about reading the space. You walk in, find the windows, and let the house tell you where to shoot. This family’s home had tall windows that poured soft, even light into the main rooms, and we barely had to move a thing. No reflectors, no fuss. The light was already there, and it was gorgeous.
The baby slept through nearly the entire session, which gave us space to let the older siblings just be themselves. One sister kept whispering to the baby. Dad held that newborn like this was old hat (because it was). We pulled in tight for a lot of these frames because the real story lived in the small stuff: tiny fingers curled around a thumb, a bonnet barely bigger than a fist, the way mom pressed her face against that little cheek and stayed there.
We have a soft spot for lifestyle newborn portraits like these. The posed basket shots and detail close-ups have their place, and we love making them. But the frames where a sister is whispering to her new sibling, or mom is pressing her nose against that tiny face? Those are the ones families come back to years later. That blend of documentary and detail work is what we aim for every time we walk through someone’s front door.
Whether we’re shooting here in Madison or out in New England, the approach stays the same: follow the light, keep things natural, and let a family just be a family. Do you travel for in-home newborn sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. We’ve photographed lifestyle newborn sessions from New England to the West Coast. Travel logistics are easy to work out once we connect, so distance shouldn’t stop you from reaching out.
How should I prepare my home for a lifestyle newborn session?
Keep it simple. Clear the surfaces near your best windows, make the bed, and don’t worry about perfection. We scout the light as soon as we arrive and work with what your home naturally gives us. The goal is for everything to feel like your life, not a set.
