Summer Wildflowers and a New Baby: Outdoor Family Newborn Session

Four kids, a brand-new baby, and July light that stretched on forever. This outdoor family newborn session at the UW Arboretum had everything we could ask for: wildflowers at peak bloom, magnolias heavy with pink, and a family that showed up ready to just be together. We barely had to say a word.

Why the Arboretum Keeps Pulling Us Back

We have a thing for this place. Every fifty feet the backdrop shifts: open prairie, dappled tree canopy, split-rail fences framed by magnolias. For a session with a sleeping newborn and four kids under ten, that variety is gold. We can move from one look to another without anyone climbing back into a car seat, and the light just follows us through.

The newborn details came first. A tiny flower crown, wicker basket, soft knit wraps in rust and cream. We pulled in close for these because the textures told the whole story on their own. No elaborate setup required. Just natural materials and a baby who slept through every single frame.

Then we let the family loose. Mom scooped up her youngest daughter and the giggles just took over. The two boys leaned against the fence like they owned the property. Their sisters twirled in matching lace dresses near the magnolias. None of it was directed. We stayed close, kept shooting, and let the energy build on its own. That is honestly when we do our best work: when nobody is thinking about the camera.

If you’re picturing your own family here, July is the sweet spot. The prairies light up with coneflowers and black-eyed Susans, and golden hour stretches long enough that we never feel rushed. For families with a newborn, we plan around the baby’s schedule and keep everything low-key. No timeline to stress about, just good light and room to breathe. Frequently Asked Questions about Newborn Family Sessions at UW Arboretum

When is the best time of year for an outdoor newborn session at the UW Arboretum?

Late June through mid-July gives you the best combination of wildflower color and long golden-hour light. We schedule these sessions in the early evening so everything stays soft and warm, and we always build in flexibility for feeding and nap breaks.

Can I bring older siblings to a newborn session?

We love it when the whole crew shows up. We photograph the newborn details first while the older kids explore, then bring everyone together once the energy is right. It keeps the session natural and stress-free for the whole family.
