Fresh Air and First Photos: Outdoor Summer Newborn Session
Three tiny girls, three wicker baskets, and a garden full of late-season wildflowers. That was the setup for this outdoor summer newborn session at Garver Feed Mill. Honestly, it was one of those evenings where everything just worked.
Wildflowers, Warm Light, and Very Sleepy Babies
We do a lot of newborn work inside our studio at Garver. We control the light and the temperature down to the degree. But when families ask about taking things outside, and the timing lines up? We’re all in. The grounds around Garver give us tall grasses, garden beds, and that late-day glow that softens everything it touches.
These three slept through almost the entire session. We nestled each one into her own basket, tucked in floral wraps and knit swaddles, and let the natural light do the heavy lifting. No reflectors, no flash. Just the sun dropping low and painting everything warm.
This is the kind of outdoor baby photography we love most. Simple, unhurried, built around whatever the babies need. One stirred, we paused. Another stretched, we waited. The garden wasn’t going anywhere, and neither were we. When you give newborns space to just be, the images have a stillness you can’t manufacture in post.
If you’re considering an outdoor summer newborn session, our advice is simple: trust the timing. Book early so we can pick a date with good light. Bring layers for the baby. Let us handle the rest. We’ve been photographing newborns at Garver for years. We know exactly where the light falls at every hour. Take a look at our newborn and maternity photography page to see more of what we do.
Can I do an outdoor newborn session at Garver Feed Mill?
You can. The gardens and grounds around the building give us beautiful natural backdrops for warm-weather sessions. We recommend scheduling within the first three weeks and timing for golden hour, when the light is softest.
When should I book a newborn session with Twig & Olive?
We recommend reaching out during your second or third trimester so we can hold a tentative date. Newborns are best photographed in those first two to three weeks. Early booking gives us flexibility to adjust around your delivery. Get in touch here to start planning.
