Cherry Blossoms Family Session: Spring at the Tidal Basin

Two kids, a wall of forsythia in full bloom, and cherry blossoms overhead. That was the scene when we arrived for this cherry blossoms family session at the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., and we knew immediately the gallery was going to sing.

Let the Kids Lead

We always tell families the same thing: just be yourselves. Play, chase, tickle, laugh. The more natural the interaction, the better the photos. Stiff and posed is never the goal. This family took that advice and ran with it, literally. The kids were bolting through the grass, ducking behind forsythia bushes, and cracking each other up the entire time. We stayed loose, shot fast, and let the energy carry the session.

The yellow forsythia against pink cherry blossoms gave us a color palette we couldn’t have planned. We pulled in tight on the kids playing in the branches because those textures and that light were too good to shoot wide. Sometimes the best backdrops aren’t monuments or skylines. Sometimes it’s just a wall of flowers and two siblings who genuinely like each other.

If you’re considering a cherry blossoms family session in D.C., our biggest piece of advice is to book early. Peak bloom is short, and timing matters. But when it lines up, there is nothing else like it. The Tidal Basin is one of those locations that earns its reputation.

These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. The last few frames of the session were just the two of them together, no kids, foreheads touching, laughing about something we weren’t meant to hear. We got it anyway.
