Two Pups and a Sunset: Portrait Session with Dogs at Mission Trails
Two huskies, golden California light, and a couple who could not stop laughing. That’s pretty much the whole story of this portrait session with dogs at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego. We’ve photographed sessions with pets before. But these two dogs brought an energy that kept us on our toes from start to finish.
Huskies, Rocks, and That San Diego Light
We timed this session for late afternoon, and the light delivered. That warm, low-angle glow through the scrub and boulders gave us a backdrop that felt wild and open. The couple settled onto the rocks with both dogs. Within seconds everyone was relaxed. No stiff posing, no stress. Just four personalities (two human, two husky) doing their thing while we worked around them.
Here’s what we always tell couples who want to bring their dogs: build in extra time. Let them sniff, explore, and burn off energy before we start shooting. It makes a huge difference. These huskies had space to roam, and once they’d checked out every rock and bush, they were happy to sit still. We pulled in tight for the quieter frames. The ones where she’s pressing her face into fur and the dog is leaning right back. Those are the shots that feel real.
A portrait session with dogs is never predictable. Honestly, that’s what makes it fun. The best frames came from in-between moments: the couple crouching to wrangle a leash, the dogs trotting ahead on the trail, a quick kiss stolen while neither husky was looking. If you’re considering a pet-friendly session in San Diego, Mission Trails gives you room and scenery to let it unfold. Check out more of our couples work to see the kind of sessions we love most.
Is Mission Trails Regional Park a good spot for a portrait session with dogs?
It’s one of our favorites in San Diego for pet-friendly sessions. The park has wide trails, rocky outcroppings, and great natural light in the late afternoon. Dogs have room to move, and the landscape gives us variety without changing locations.
How do I prepare my dogs for a couples photo session?
Give them a good walk beforehand, bring their favorite treats, and plan for extra time at the start so they can explore. We work around the dogs’ energy rather than fighting it. A relaxed pup makes for better photos every time.
