A Lakeside Summer Wedding: Love, Laughter & Their Dog at Monona Terrace
Let’s be honest. The golden retriever won the day. That’s what happens when your pup comes trotting down the aisle at a Monona Terrace wedding and the entire crowd loses it. The ceremony was stunning, the vows were personal and raw, and the light over Lake Monona gave us one of those evenings where everything just glows. But that dog? Pure magic. As a Monona Terrace wedding photographer team, we knew within the first hour this gallery was going to be something special.
Getting Ready with Family and Friends
The hotel suite that morning was loud in the best way. Bridesmaids were laughing so hard they could barely hold still, and the bride’s mom had this quiet, tender moment helping her daughter into her gown that nearly got us. Little ones in matching pajamas kept darting through every frame, and honestly, that kind of beautiful chaos is when our favorite getting-ready images happen. No one is performing. Everyone is just living in it.
Over on the groom’s side, the details told their own story. Rich blue bow tie. Floral tie laid across a red book. Leather watch that felt perfectly him. We pulled in close for these because they disappear fast once the day picks up speed. Blue suit jacket hanging between two lamps, white flats nestled in greenery, pearl hair accessories on a vintage book. Small pieces of a bigger picture, and we love getting to them before the rush takes over.
First Look Along the Stone Corridors
For the first look, we brought them to a quiet stone corridor near Monona Terrace. The sandstone walls and deep geometric lines gave us this moody, architectural energy that felt completely different from the bright lakeside terrace. Almost like stepping into a secret passageway. He teared up. She laughed. Then they just held hands and stood there, soaking it in. These two were so present with each other, and that is when we do our best work.
Architectural backdrops like this are one of the reasons we love shooting here. The Frank Lloyd Wright design gives you layers and depth that most venues simply can’t offer. Every hallway, every railing, every shift in natural light opens up something new. If you’re considering Monona Terrace for your wedding, know that you’ll never run out of places to make incredible portraits.
Wedding Party Portraits Downtown
After the first look, the full wedding party gathered in front of a gorgeous ornate building in downtown Madison. Bridesmaids in dusty blue, groomsmen sharp in dark suits, and everyone genuinely having fun. Bouquets got tossed in the air. People were cracking each other up between every click. That energy carried straight into the frames, and we shot wide to catch all of it because a group this good deserves the full scene.
One of our favorite things about working downtown is the variety within walking distance. Historic architecture sits a few steps from green tree-lined paths, and the lakefront is right there. You can shift the entire mood of a gallery just by turning a corner.
Portraits with Their Favorite Furry Guest
Including a dog in your wedding takes extra planning, but the payoff is enormous. This couple’s golden retriever was pure joy on four legs, tongue out, grinning at the camera like a professional. The three of them crouched together on the Monona Terrace rooftop, and no posing was needed. Just real, unscripted love. We barely had to direct a thing.
From there, we stole a few quiet minutes for couple portraits. Soft golden light filtered through flowering branches, and the two of them leaned into each other against the white curves of the terrace. The light was doing all the heavy lifting, so we kept it simple and let them be. Then we walked toward the Capitol for a classic frame, the dome glowing behind them in hazy summer air. That shot alone is worth the walk every single time.
Reception Details and Celebration
Back inside Monona Terrace, the reception space felt warm and lush. Greenery spilled across every surface: eucalyptus runners down the tables, tropical plants lining the escort card display, and a “Mr & Mrs” sign tucked among trailing leaves. The personal touches were everywhere. One bar sign featured an illustration of their dog that read “Beer, Wine, and Soda are on Bear.” That kind of detail tells you exactly who these two are, and it’s the stuff we always make sure to document.
Instead of a traditional tiered cake, they went with stacked bundt cakes. Red velvet on top, classic vanilla on the bottom, all dripping with white icing. They cut into it together by the floor-to-ceiling windows while the last of the evening light streamed in over Lake Monona. As a Monona Terrace wedding photographer team, we live for choices like that. When couples lean into what actually feels like them, it shows in every single frame. This gallery is proof.

What makes Monona Terrace a great venue for wedding photos?
Monona Terrace offers a rare combination of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and natural lakeside beauty. The rooftop terrace provides panoramic views of Lake Monona. Meanwhile, the stone corridors and geometric lines create dramatic, moody backdrops. That range means your gallery will include everything from grand, sweeping scenes to quiet, intimate portraits.
What is your advice for couples who want to include their dog in their wedding?
We love it when couples bring their pets along! Check with your venue about their specific pet policies first. From there, assign a trusted friend or family member as the designated handler. They can bring the dog for key moments like the ceremony or portraits. Then they can make sure the pup is comfortable for the rest of the evening.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
