Northern Wisconsin Wedding Photography: Blake & Katlyn’s Lakeside Celebration in Ashland
Goldenrod up to your waist, cowboy boots in the tall grass, a canoe parked in a wildflower field, and fireworks lighting up Lake Superior after dark. Blake and Katlyn’s northern Wisconsin wedding photography is the kind of gallery that reminds us exactly why we do this. Their July celebration at a private residence in Ashland felt like summer in the Northwoods distilled into a single day, and every detail was unmistakably them.
Cowboy Boots, Lake Mist, and Getting Ready in the Wild
The drive from Madison to Ashland is a good four hours, and somewhere north of Wausau the temperature dropped nearly twenty degrees. That’s Lake Superior doing its thing. Cool mist rolled off the water one minute, then full sun broke through and lit up the entire property. It kept us reading the light constantly, adjusting on the fly. Blake and Katlyn? Completely unfazed. They were home.
Their getting-ready details told us everything about how this day would feel. White cowboy boots with silver concho straps sitting in the tall grass. A lush, richly toned bouquet by Wild Hollow Farm resting against weathered white wood. Katlyn’s Essense of Australia gown hanging on the front of a green outbuilding, framed by pines. Nothing was staged in a hotel suite under fluorescent light. Everything felt organic, like it grew right out of the property. We shot those details wide to let the landscape do the talking, and honestly, that approach set the tone for the rest of the day.
An Outdoor Ceremony with Heart
The ceremony unfolded on an open lawn under a wooden arbor, white chairs fanning out in rows, an orchard tree standing beside the unity table. A friend officiated, and you could feel the difference immediately. No rehearsed script. Real words from someone who actually knows them. Their black lab waited at the altar with Blake, and a hand-painted sign reading “Blake ❤ Katlyn, August 13, 2022” greeted guests as they settled in.
The moment that stopped us was the tree-planting ceremony. Blake and Katlyn poured soil together into a woven basket holding a small plant, symbolizing the life they’re growing. It was quiet and unhurried. No big production, just the two of them with their hands in the dirt on land they actually call home. That kind of ritual hits differently when it happens in your own backyard, and we pulled in close because those expressions, that stillness, deserved the full frame. If you’re considering a private-property wedding in northern Wisconsin, know that this is the magic of it: nothing between you and the people who matter most.
Dogs, a Vintage Truck, and Golden Hour
Portraits after the ceremony were pure gold. Blake and Katlyn sat on the stone front steps with both of their dogs: a golden retriever in a floral collar and a black lab wearing a tiny tuxedo bib. That single frame tells you everything you need to know about these two. Adventurous, warm, a little bit funny, and completely themselves.
From there, we moved into the fields. Katlyn’s cathedral-length veil caught the wind and billowed out behind them while they stood among tall grass and berry bushes. Then we spotted the vintage white pickup truck on the property, and everything clicked. The images of them laughing and kissing through the window, Blake in his cowboy hat, felt like something out of a country song. As golden hour hit, they walked hand in hand toward the setting sun, completely backlit, and we just held the shutter and trusted the light. Those backlit frames in the open field are some of our favorites from the entire season. The Northwoods gave us a canvas we couldn’t have built in a studio.
Rustic Reception Details and a Fireworks Finale
Under the tent, every detail felt collected rather than curated. Vintage books, amber bottles, eucalyptus garlands, and a Polaroid Land Camera served as table centerpieces. A reclaimed-wood memorial board displayed family photos flanked by small evergreen topiaries. String lights draped across the tent ceiling wrapped the whole space in a warm, intimate glow that made our job easy. The light was soft, golden, and everywhere.
And then the fireworks. Blake and Katlyn stood in the field as colors exploded above them, fists raised, laughing, completely lost in the moment. Blake dipped Katlyn for a kiss while sparks rained down behind them and that vintage truck sat parked in the background. This is the kind of northern Wisconsin wedding photography moment that reminds us why we drive four hours and never think twice about it. Their Ashland celebration ended exactly the way it began: bold, joyful, and entirely themselves.

What is your advice for couples planning a wedding at a private residence?
A backyard or private-property wedding is incredibly personal. Start by hiring a solid rental company for the tent, tables, chairs, and restrooms. Think through parking and flow early so guests feel comfortable. Most importantly, lean into what makes the setting yours. The land, the views, the family history. That personal connection is something no traditional venue can replicate.
How do you approach adventurous, outdoorsy weddings?
We thrive on them. Our approach is to stay flexible and look for moments that reflect the couple’s personality, whether that’s a canoe ride, a vintage truck, or an open field at golden hour. For a Northwoods wedding photographer, the landscape is a huge part of the story. We always make time to use it.
