Molly & Jake’s Fall Wedding at St. Matthias Church
Molly and Jake had the kind of energy that makes everyone around them lighter. Their St Matthias Church fall wedding in Cascade, Iowa, was rooted in family, community, and a whole lot of laughter. From the reverent ceremony under those soaring Gothic arches to a packed dance floor at Farley Memorial Hall, this day was warm in every sense of the word. And for us behind the camera, it was exactly the kind of celebration we love to photograph.
The Details and the Getting Ready
The morning started with color. Bright marigolds, jewel-toned florals, sparkly rose-gold heels, and a “Save the Date” card the bridesmaids held up together in their floral robes. Molly’s invitation suite sat on weathered stone surrounded by orange and red flowers, and honestly, that textured backdrop did all the work for us. Sometimes the best detail shots happen when the couple already has great taste.
Her bridesmaids wore a gorgeous mix of blue and navy gowns, each in a slightly different shade. That tonal variation gave us beautiful variety in every group frame without looking mismatched. Lined up in front of a brick building with big windows, the whole crew was relaxed, laughing, and genuinely having fun. Those are the moments we reach for.
Inside St. Matthias Church
If you’ve never been inside St. Matthias Church in Cascade, picture tall pointed arches, warm pendant lighting, and an ornate white altar that practically glows. The pews were packed. Every seat, every row. That kind of full-house energy changes the way a ceremony photographs because there’s emotion everywhere you point the lens.
For our approach, we pulled back wide to capture the architecture and the scale of the congregation. The light inside was soft and even, which gave us clean, warm tones without fighting harsh shadows. Churches like this one remind us why we love shooting fall Catholic weddings in small Iowa towns. The space does so much of the storytelling on its own.
A Wedding Party That Brought the Fun
After the ceremony, we headed outside with the full wedding party and things got loud in the best way. The group surrounded Molly and Jake for a kiss while everyone threw their hands up and cheered. Then the groomsmen picked Jake up and carried him around like a crowd-surfing champion. It was pure chaos, and we were right in the middle of it clicking away.
This is the stuff that makes a gallery memorable. Posed portraits are great, but the moments where a wedding party completely lets loose tell you who these people actually are. Jake’s crew was all in, and Molly’s bridesmaids matched that energy frame for frame.
Portraits with a Rural Iowa Backdrop
For couple portraits, we found a weathered white outbuilding with peeling paint, old garage doors, and wooden steps. It sounds simple, but that texture against Molly’s beaded lace gown and Jake’s sharp navy suit was a photographer’s dream. Rural Iowa has these little pockets of character everywhere, and they make for portrait backdrops that feel authentic instead of staged.
Molly and Jake were completely at ease with each other. Leaning in close, walking hand in hand, sitting on those worn steps with her bouquet resting beside them. No stiff posing, no awkward direction needed. When a couple is that comfortable, our job is just to stay out of the way and let the connection speak. If you’re planning a Cascade Iowa church wedding with portraits nearby, know that this area has so much to offer.
The Reception at Farley Memorial Hall
Farley Memorial Hall was transformed with navy linens, mercury glass candles, eucalyptus runners, and warm string lights draped along the ceiling. The guest book table had a hand-lettered sign, framed photos, and a sweet “love” print that tied the whole look together. Every detail felt personal, not Pinterest-perfect, and that made it photograph beautifully.
The dessert spread deserves its own mention. A white cake topped with fresh red and pink flowers sat next to trays of decorated cupcakes and frosted cookies. Soft draping and candlelight behind the display gave us this rich, warm palette to work with. Reception details like these always look their best in low, ambient light, so we leaned into the glow and kept things natural.
A Dance Floor That Never Quit
By the time 5th Fret had the room going, the dance floor was wall to wall. Beers in the air, arms around shoulders, everyone singing along. Jake was right in the center of it, belting it out with his groomsmen while Molly laughed beside him. That shift from polished ceremony to late-night party energy is something we live for, and this crowd delivered.
Small-town Iowa weddings have a way of filling every corner of a room with genuine joy. There’s no pretense, no standing around looking cool. People show up and they celebrate. As photographers, that gives us a packed frame full of real emotion. Molly and Jake’s St Matthias Church fall wedding was one of the best examples we’ve seen of a community showing up with everything they had.
