Pines, Peaks, and a Family Dance Floor: A Wedding at Summit Mountain Lodge in Montana
Summit Mountain Lodge sits in East Glacier, Montana, with golden brush running down the hillside, dark pines packed close together, and a wall of Rocky Mountain peaks behind all of it. We noticed that view before we unloaded a single bag. This wedding was about a family, a lot of pine trees, and those mountains.
Getting Ready in the Montana Pines
Getting ready was slow and quiet, the way we like it. Everyone gathered at the cabins tucked back in the trees, with coffee and no rush. Then the groom knelt down to help his young son get dressed. Red suspenders. Tiny leather shoes. A plaid bow tie on a little guy who was taking all of it very seriously.
Warm light came through the pines and landed on the cabin porch, so we used only available light for those getting-ready frames. No posing. Just a family taking a minute together before the ceremony.
A Ceremony With the Rockies Behind It
They said their vows on the lodge’s raised wooden deck, with the Rocky Mountains rising right behind them. Guests lined both sides in reds, golds, and mustard, which matched the brush on the hillside so well it looked planned. We shot the ceremony wide. With mountains like that, you let them into the frame.
Then the wedding party followed us into the forest for group portraits. Tall pines made a dark, natural frame overhead, and the brown tweed suits and jewel-toned dresses stood out against all that green. This group was easygoing and up for anything, which always makes for better pictures.
Portraits in the Forest
After the group photos, we took a few quiet minutes with just the two of them. Light came through the canopy in patches and caught the lace on her dress. Her wildflower crown fit right in. One of our favorite frames from the day is the two of them kissing behind a dreamcatcher, with the forest soft and blurred behind them. We didn’t plan that one. The place suggested it.
Big peaks, deep forest, and late-afternoon light that turns everything amber. When a couple picks a place like this, the landscape tells a good part of the story. Our job is to keep it in the frame without letting it take over.
Dancing Under the Timber Pavilion
In the evening, the reception moved to Summit Mountain Lodge’s timber pavilion. String lights hung from the exposed beams, and through the open sides you could still see the mountains and the lodge’s red-roofed cabins fading into dusk. We stayed close for the toasts, the laughing, and the quiet looks across the table.
Their first dance was the kind that makes a room go quiet. Then the kids joined in, and the whole family ended up on the dance floor together under the string lights. For us, that was the heart of the day. Places like East Glacier push us to do our best work. To see more weddings like this one, take a look at our wedding photography portfolio.
Thank you to the vendors who made this day happen:
What makes Summit Mountain Lodge a great venue for wedding photos?
For this couple, it was having everything close together. The ceremony on the deck had the mountains behind it, the cabins gave us a warm spot to get ready, the pines around the lodge gave us shaded portraits, and the timber pavilion held the reception. The lodge sits near Glacier National Park, and it shows in every direction you point a camera.
Do you travel for destination weddings outside of Wisconsin?
Yes. Weddings like this one in Montana are some of our favorite work, because a setting like this pushes us to make photos we couldn’t make anywhere else. Travel details depend on your date and location, so reach out and we’ll talk it through.
We’re planning a destination wedding. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! Start with our wedding photography portfolio, then tell us where you’re headed. We’re happy to share full galleries from mountain and destination weddings.
