Real Life, Beautiful Light: Lifestyle In-Home Newborn Session

A toddler grinning ear to ear while his baby brother slept through the whole thing. That’s how this lifestyle in-home newborn session started, and honestly, it set the tone for everything that followed. We traveled to Stoughton for this one, and from the moment we walked in, we knew the light in this home was going to give us something special.

Why We Love Shooting at Home

There is no set to build when a family invites us into their space. The nursery they spent months putting together, the favorite reading chair, the window that catches afternoon sun. Those details tell a story we could never recreate in a studio. We found soft, directional light pouring through the bedroom windows, and we barely had to move a thing. The house did the work for us.

Big brother was a natural. He climbed right up on the bed, laid next to his new sibling, and just looked at him like he’d been waiting for this exact person to show up. We pulled in close for those moments because they don’t last. A few seconds of stillness between two brothers, and then the toddler was off and running again.

We always spend time on the details during in-home newborn photography sessions. The little bunny prints on the wall, a wooden ring toy propped against the Moses basket, that impossibly small fist curled up against a cheek. These are the things parents forget they had, and years from now, they’re the images that hit hardest.

This baby slept through nearly everything, which gave us time to work through the home at our own pace. The rattan egg chair in the nursery was a favorite spot. Soft textures, warm tones, and a baby who couldn’t have been more relaxed. That combination is a photographer’s dream, and we leaned into it.

The last frames of the session were just mom and baby by the window. We shot this one in black and white because the moment called for it. No distractions, no color competing for attention. Just a mother looking at her son. If you’re considering a Stoughton newborn session or anywhere in the surrounding area, we’d love to come to you. Our studio inside Garver Feed Mill is always an option too, but there is something irreplaceable about your own home.

Frequently Asked Questions about Newborn Sessions at Home

Do you travel for in-home newborn sessions outside of Madison?

We do. Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Middleton, and beyond. We love coming to families wherever home is. Travel within the greater Madison area is included, and we’re happy to discuss locations farther out.

How do I prepare my home for a lifestyle newborn session?

Keep it simple. Clear off surfaces near your best windows and make the bed. We work with natural light and look for the warmest, brightest rooms in your home. No major cleaning overhaul required.
