McCarthy Park Engagement Session: Wildflowers, Golden Light, and One Very Good Dog

The light was already warm when we pulled up, and these two were already laughing before we even got the cameras out. That energy set the tone for the entire McCarthy Park engagement session. McCarthy Youth & Conservation County Park in Cottage Grove gave us rolling fields, wildflowers, winding trails, and that kind of golden hour glow you just can’t manufacture.

Wide Open Fields and Easy Chemistry

We have a thing for McCarthy Park. The landscape shifts enough that every frame feels different, but the palette stays cohesive: deep greens, golden grasses, soft purple wildflowers catching the last light. We shot wide through the meadow to let the sky do its thing, then pulled in close when they forgot we were there. That’s where the best frames always live.

If you’re looking for Cottage Grove engagement photos with real variety, this park delivers. One minute we were in an open meadow under a dramatic sky, the next we were tucked into sumac so green it almost looked tropical. These two moved through every spot like they’d been here a hundred times, completely relaxed. Honestly, that is when we do our best work.

And then their dog showed up. A big, goofy, tail-wagging presence that turned the last stretch of the session into pure joy. We leaned into it, shooting fast while they laughed and the pup soaked up every bit of attention. Including your dog in an engagement session is always a good call, and this one absolutely stole the show.

The session wrapped with the two of them on a blanket in the sumac, quiet and close. That shift from playful energy to something softer is one of our favorite things to capture. Frequently Asked Questions about Engagement Sessions at McCarthy Park

When is the best time for engagement photos at McCarthy Park?

We recommend booking your session about an hour and a half before sunset. That window gives you soft, warm light across the open fields, and the park’s trails and meadows look incredible as the sun drops low. Summer and early fall tend to offer the longest golden hours.

Can I bring my dog to an engagement session?

Yes, and we genuinely encourage it. Dogs bring an energy that loosens everyone up, and some of our favorite frames come from those unscripted moments. McCarthy Park is dog-friendly, which makes it an easy choice. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan the flow.
