Schusters Farm Family Photos: Zinnias, Laughter, and a Rusty Truck
Three sisters holding fistfuls of zinnias, a rusty truck older than all of us combined, and light that kept shifting under summer clouds. These Schusters Farm family photos had the kind of energy you can’t stage, and we didn’t try to.
The Kind of Chaos We Love
Schuster’s Farm in Deerfield has these massive zinnia fields that explode with color in summer. Pinks, oranges, deep reds, all packed tight and stretching out in every direction. We shot wide to take in the rows of blooms, then pulled in tight when the real moments started happening between family members.
Every family moves differently. Some need a minute to settle in, and some come in hot. This crew was the second kind. The girls were running through the flowers within thirty seconds of arriving, and their parents just let it happen. That’s when we do our best work, when nobody is worried about being perfect.
The old truck sitting at the edge of the field gave us this incredible anchor for the portraits. Peeling paint, rust patina, wildly saturated flowers behind it. If you’re planning a family session during zinnia season, this is the spot. The colors do half the work for us.
One moment from this session stopped us. Mom leaned over to whisper something to her oldest, and whatever she said made the girl crack up completely. That kind of unscripted reaction is worth more than any posed group shot. We live for the in-between frames, the ones that remind you what it actually felt like to be there.
The clouds rolled in thick toward the end and gave us this moody, dramatic sky over the entire field. Sometimes the best light shows up when the sun ducks behind cover. It softened everything, and the colors in those zinnias absolutely popped. We have a thing for Schuster’s Farm family photography sessions, and evenings like this one are exactly why.
When is the best time of year for family photos at Schuster’s Farm?
Late summer is ideal. The zinnia fields are typically at peak bloom from mid-July through September, and the evening light pairs beautifully with all that color. We recommend booking a session about an hour before sunset for the softest, warmest tones.
