Candid and Connected: A Spring Lilacs Family Session
The lilacs were at peak bloom, the kids were full of energy, and no one was trying too hard to smile. That’s the recipe for a great spring lilacs family session, and this one at the UW Arboretum delivered on every level.
Letting the Moments Happen
We have a thing for the Arboretum. The paths feel unhurried, the light filters through the canopy in the best way, and when the lilacs are out, the color is unreal. Purple everywhere, soft and layered, the kind of backdrop you can’t manufacture. We shot wide early on just to soak in that setting, and then we pulled in close when the real stuff started happening.
And the real stuff? Dad getting tackled in the grass. The girls whispering something to each other and then dissolving into laughter. Mom wrapping both kids in a hug that nobody posed for. We keep family sessions loose on purpose. Give kids room to be kids and the photos practically make themselves.
This family was completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No stiff posing, no forced grins. Just connection. The blanket on the lawn became its own little world for a while, and we stayed back and let it unfold. Some of our favorite frames came from those quiet in-between moments when nobody was thinking about the camera at all.
If you’re considering family photography in Madison, the Arboretum in late May or early June is hard to beat. The lilacs won’t last forever, but we’ll make sure the photos do.
When is the best time for family photos at UW Arboretum?
Late May through early June is ideal if you want lilacs in the background. Fall is another beautiful window with rich color along the paths. We recommend booking a few weeks ahead for either season so we can time it with peak bloom or foliage.
How do I book a family session with Twig & Olive?
