Love in Every Detail: A Stormy Skies Family Session
The sky was heavy and dramatic, the grass was golden, and this little family brought so much energy that we barely noticed the clouds rolling overhead. This stormy skies family session outside Amsterdam gave us the kind of moody, warm light that you just can’t manufacture.
Golden Grass, Big Skies, and a Kid Who Would Not Stop Laughing
We’ve shot in a lot of beautiful places, but there’s something about an open field under brooding skies that changes the way everything looks. The tones go warmer. Skin glows. Contrast deepens without any effort. We leaned into that energy from the first frame and let this family do their thing.
Their little guy was fearless. Swinging between mom and dad, sprinting through the tall grass, cracking up every time we looked his way. That kind of unfiltered joy is what we chase during family sessions. The best shots almost always come from the in-between moments, not the posed ones.
One of our favorite details from this session was the vintage iron bed set out in the middle of the field. It sounds wild, but it worked. The contrast between that raw, weathered metal and the soft golden grass gave us a frame that felt cinematic. We shot wide to pull in the full landscape and let the sky do the heavy lifting.
These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. They matched each other’s rhythm perfectly, picking their son up, lying in the grass together, laughing at nothing in particular. Every family has its own pace, and ours is to follow it, not fight it.
If you’re considering an Amsterdam family session and you’re worried about the weather, don’t be. Overcast skies are a photographer’s gift. The diffused light wraps around faces, softens shadows, and turns a simple field into something extraordinary. We’d take stormy skies over harsh midday sun every single time.
Do you travel to Amsterdam for family photography sessions?
We do. Twig & Olive Photography travels internationally for family sessions, and Amsterdam is one of our favorite locations. The open landscapes and dramatic skies outside the city give us incredible backdrops. Reach out and let us know when you’re thinking, and we’ll make it work.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our family session?
Overcast and even stormy skies often produce some of our most beautiful work. Cloud cover acts as a natural softbox, creating even, flattering light without harsh shadows. We always have a backup plan, but nine times out of ten, moody skies make the gallery better.
