A Lakeside Summer Wedding: Northwoods Wisconsin Wedding Photography at a Private Home
Pine needles underfoot, canoes stacked by the water, and the smell of woodsmoke drifting through the trees. That was the setting for Michaela and Jeremy’s Northwoods Wisconsin wedding photography session in Hazelhurst. Honestly, it felt less like a gig and more like being invited into something deeply personal. These two built their entire day around the family cabin they love, and every choice reflected that.
Pine Trees, Firewood, and a Green Suit
Jeremy got ready outside among stacked firewood and tall pines. That teal green suit hanging on the woodpile was one of those images that just works before you even press the shutter. His groomsmen showed up in navy, and the color contrast under the canopy was exactly the kind of thing we get excited about. Meanwhile, Michaela was on the other side of the property with her dog at her feet. She slipped on her shoes next to a row of overturned canoes. The light filtering through the trees was soft and warm, giving us everything we needed.
One of our favorite moments came before the ceremony even started. Michaela’s mom saw her in the dress for the first time near a pile of split birch. They just held onto each other. No posing, no prompting. That kind of raw emotion next to something as simple as a woodpile is what makes a private home wedding in the Northwoods feel so real.
A Ceremony in the Woods
The ceremony site was tucked back in the trees on the property, with a floral arch framed by towering hardwoods. When Michaela came down the aisle, Jeremy completely lost it. Hand over his face, tears rolling. The canopy overhead created beautiful dappled light. We pulled in tight to capture every bit of it. Ring exchange, first kiss, the whole crowd erupting. It all happened under that green ceiling of leaves, and no traditional venue can replicate that kind of intimacy.
If you’re considering a backyard ceremony in Northern Wisconsin, this is what it can look like. No walls, no rules. Just the people you love standing in a place that already means something to you.
The Reception Under String Lights
After the ceremony, dinner was set up on the patio beneath the cabin’s upper deck. Long farm tables with dark wood, black matte plates, gauze runners, and lush floral arrangements from Feisty Flowers. Peach roses, deep plum, white peonies, scattered fruit. The styling felt editorial but still completely at home in the woods. The cake from Yield Bakehouse matched that same palette. It sat on a bed of cheesecloth with fresh blooms trailing up the tiers.
Toasts happened as the evening light faded. Parents got emotional. Friends got loud. From there, the couple shared their first dance on the grass with string lights glowing overhead and pine trees framing every angle. We shot wide to get the full scene, then moved in close. The way Michaela was laughing into Jeremy’s shoulder was too good to miss. That shift from heartfelt ceremony to relaxed lakeside celebration is something we live for.
Down to the Water
The portraits we took by the lake that evening are some of our favorites from any Northwoods wedding. Michaela and Jeremy walked down to the dock, climbed into a canoe in full wedding attire, and paddled out. No hesitation. Their dogs were running around the dock, one of them nearly hopping in after the couple. The light was fading into that deep blue-purple hour. Shooting from shore with them silhouetted against still water gave us frames that feel like a painting.
Back on land, we grabbed a few more with the dogs. One curled up in Michaela’s arms like a baby. The other wanted nothing to do with sitting still, which made for genuinely hilarious outtakes. These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No stiff poses, no forced smiles. Just a couple in love, their dogs, and a lake going dark behind them.

What makes a private home in the Northwoods a great wedding location?
A family cabin or lakeside property offers total creative freedom and a setting that already means something to you. The natural backdrop of tall pines, quiet lakes, and wooded ceremony sites creates an atmosphere that no ballroom can match. From a photography standpoint, the variety of textures and light is incredible.
How do you handle pet-friendly wedding portraits?
Pets are part of the family, and we love including them. Our approach is to keep things relaxed and schedule a dedicated window for pet photos, usually right after the ceremony or during golden hour portraits. Treats help. Patience helps more. The candid moments with your dogs tend to be some of the best frames in the gallery.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
