Summer Golden Hour at Garver: A Sunset Maternity Session

The light that evening was the kind you can’t plan for. Warm, low, and golden, pouring across the meadow behind Garver Feed Mill like it had nowhere else to be. We stepped outside our studio and knew this sunset summer maternity session was going to be something special. These two showed up relaxed, tuned into each other, and ready to just be together in front of the camera.

Wildflowers, Warm Light, and Zero Stress

One of our favorite things about being based at Garver is what’s right outside the door. In summer, the fields fill with coneflowers, tall grasses, and wildflowers that catch evening light beautifully. We started inside the studio for a few quieter portraits, then headed out as the sun dropped. That transition from controlled studio light to wide-open golden hour is something we look forward to every time.

We shot wide through the meadow to let the landscape breathe, then pulled in tight for the quieter moments. The fallen tree at the edge of the field gave us this unexpected frame, almost sculptural, and they leaned right into it. No direction needed. Sometimes a couple just knows how to be near each other. Our job is to stay out of the way and keep shooting.

That ivy-covered brick wall near the building is a spot we come back to again and again. The texture, the height, the way it holds warm light on skin. It’s a photographer’s gift. The teal of her dress against all that green? We didn’t have to do a thing. If you’re considering a sunset summer maternity session at Garver, know that the grounds offer real variety: meadow, water, old brick, open sky, all within a short walk.

By the end, the sun was sitting right on the horizon and everything had that deep amber glow. These two were laughing, leaning into each other, completely at ease. That’s when we do our best work. Not when everything is perfectly posed, but when the couple forgets we’re there and just lives in the moment. Check out more of our maternity and newborn work to see what we mean.

Frequently Asked Questions about Maternity Sessions at Garver Feed Mill

When is the best time of year for a maternity session at Garver Feed Mill?

Summer and early fall are our favorites for outdoor maternity work at Garver. The wildflower meadow peaks in July and August, and golden hour light in those months is long and generous. That said, our indoor studio at Garver is available year-round, so winter sessions work beautifully too.

Can I combine a maternity session with a newborn session later?

Absolutely. Many of our clients book both, and we love the continuity of documenting that arc from pregnancy to those first few weeks. Reach out and we’ll help you plan the timing for both sessions.
