Golden hour hit the meadow at Rancho San Antonio Preserve and everything just opened up. The grass turned warm, the light went soft, and these four were completely in their element. Our Rancho San Antonio family photos with this crew are some of our favorites from our Bay Area travel sessions, and the reason is simple: they forgot we were there.
When a Family Finds Their Rhythm
We always tell families the same thing before a session: just be yourselves. Play, explore, be loud if you’re loud, be quiet if you’re quiet. This family leaned all the way into it. The girls took off into the tall grass almost immediately, and we followed. That’s honestly where the best frames come from, not from posing but from chasing.
Mom got down on their level to look at grass stems and wildflowers, and the connection between the three of them was effortless. We pulled in close for those moments because that’s where you see the real relationship. No prompting needed.
The preserve’s open meadows and tree-lined paths gave us two completely different backdrops within a short walk. We shot wide on the path to show the scale of those oaks overhead, then switched to tighter frames in the golden grass where the light was doing all the heavy lifting. Then there were these two girls. One in white ruffles, one in pink tulle, both completely unbothered by the camera. The younger one found a grass stem and held it up like a trophy. We ended with mom scooping up her daughter in the last minutes of light. The kind of hug where the kid throws her head back laughing. That frame is everything a family session should be: real, warm, completely theirs.
When is the best time for family photos at Rancho San Antonio Preserve?
Late afternoon, about an hour before sunset, is the sweet spot. The open meadows catch beautiful golden light and the tree-lined paths provide soft, even shade. Fall is especially gorgeous because the grass takes on a warm, amber tone that photographs beautifully.
