Together Is Our Favorite Place: Campus Family Session
Golden hour on the lakeshore with a family that actually likes each other? That’s the kind of campus family session we live for. This one took place at Hasler Laboratory of Limnology on the UW-Madison campus. Rocky shoreline, warm brick, late afternoon light. Frame after frame worth keeping.
Rocks, Lake Light, and Zero Stiffness
The rocks along the shore at Hasler Lab are uneven and a little wild. That’s exactly why they work. Kids scramble. Parents follow. Nobody stands still long enough to look posed, and we get to chase the real stuff. Dad scooped up his daughter and just held on. We pulled in tight because that moment didn’t need a wide shot. It needed closeness.
Then their son got dad laughing so hard it bent him in half. We shot through that whole sequence because the joy was contagious. One of our favorite details from this campus family session was how the kids kept pulling their parents into play.
The light coming off Lake Mendota was soft and low that evening. It wrapped around everything with this warm amber tone that made skin glow without any effort from us. We shot wide to pull in the water and the sky, then came in close for the quiet moments. If you’re looking for family photos in Madison that feel alive, this stretch of campus is worth knowing about.
We moved toward the brick buildings as the sun dropped lower. The contrast between warm stone and soft fall light gave us a completely different palette. These two siblings were all smiles. Sibling portraits where nobody is being forced to hug? A photographer’s dream.
The last frames were all connection. Mom and dad forehead to forehead. The whole family loose and laughing, nobody watching the clock. That kind of ease is when we do our best work, and this family brought it from the first minute.
Is Hasler Laboratory of Limnology a good spot for family photos?
It’s one of our favorite campus locations. The rocky lakeshore gives you natural texture and movement, and the brick buildings nearby offer a second look without driving anywhere. Late afternoon light off Lake Mendota is especially good in fall.
