Running Wild: El Dorado Dry Lake Bed Family Photos

The wind was warm, the light was golden, and this family showed up ready to just be themselves. That’s all we ever ask for, and this El Dorado Dry Lake family session delivered in a way we won’t forget anytime soon.

Wide Open Space, Zero Distractions

There is nothing out here. No trees, no buildings, no visual noise. Just flat, cracked earth stretching to the mountains. For us as photographers, that’s a gift. Every frame becomes about the people, the light, and whatever energy they bring. We shot wide to let the landscape do the work, then pulled in close when the real moments started happening.

If you’re considering the El Dorado Dry Lake Bed for family photos, here’s what you need to know: timing is everything. We planned this session for the last hour before sunset, and that Nevada sky gave us colors we couldn’t have manufactured in a studio. Warm golds, soft pinks, that dusty amber tone that makes skin look incredible.

This family had a natural ease with each other that made our job almost too easy. Dad wrestling with his son one minute, then pulling his daughter in for a quiet moment the next. Mom watching it all with this look that said she knew exactly how good this was. We live for that kind of awareness in our subjects.

Let Them Be Loud

Our approach with families is always the same: move, play, be ridiculous. An El Dorado Dry Lake family session like this one is perfect for that philosophy because there’s literally nowhere to hide. No fences, no sidewalks, no reason to stay contained. We stay ready for all of it, from blanket tosses to full sprints across the lakebed to the tackle that almost takes Dad down.

The kids stole the show, honestly. That last frame of their daughter spinning a blanket overhead in cowboy boots? We barely had time to drop low and catch it. Sometimes the best shots are the ones you almost miss. Check out more of our work on our family photography portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Photography at El Dorado Dry Lake Bed

When is the best time of day for family photos at El Dorado Dry Lake Bed?

The last hour before sunset is ideal. The lake bed faces west toward the mountains, so you get soft golden light without harsh shadows. We always recommend booking a late afternoon session here, especially in winter when the sun sits lower and the color is even richer.

Do you travel to Nevada for family sessions?

We do. Our studio is based in Madison, Wisconsin, but we travel regularly for family sessions across the country. If you’re in the Boulder City or Las Vegas area, reach out and let’s figure out the details together.
