Candid and Connected: Flower Garden Family Session
Summer light filtering through crape myrtles, two sisters who could not stop laughing, and a family so at ease it felt like we were photographing old friends. This flower garden family session at Historic Tuckahoe in Richmond gave us the kind of frames that remind us why we love this work.
Letting the Moments Happen
We always tell families the same thing before a session: just be yourselves. Play, tickle, chase each other around. The best photos happen when nobody is thinking about the camera, and this family took that advice to heart. The girls were cracking each other up on a wooden log surrounded by wildflowers, and we just kept shooting.
Historic Tuckahoe is one of those places that gives you layers to work with. Brick pathways, blooming garden beds, old trees that filter the light in ways you can’t manufacture. We timed the session for golden hour, and it paid off. The warm glow through the crape myrtles wrapped around this family beautifully. If you’re considering Historic Tuckahoe for your own family photos, the gardens are stunning and the light just before sunset is unreal.
What we love most about a session like this is the in-between stuff. A toddler reaching for mom. Sisters leaning into each other without thinking about it. Those quiet, honest connections are what turn family photos into something you actually want to hang on the wall. This family gave us all of that, and honestly, it’s when we do our best work. Is Historic Tuckahoe in Richmond a good location for family photos?
It’s a fantastic spot. The brick pathways, mature trees, and flower gardens give you a variety of backdrops in one location, and the golden hour light through the tree canopy is hard to beat. We recommend booking your session about an hour before sunset for the best results.
