Late Summer Milestone Session: Golden Hour at Cherokee Marsh

She showed up in a yellow floral dress, and the late evening light did the rest. This late summer milestone session at Cherokee Marsh was one of those golden hour evenings where everything just clicked, and we barely had to direct a thing.

The Kind of Session We Live For

Cherokee Marsh has this quiet, wild energy that works beautifully for families. The trails wind through tall grasses and open up to these pockets of warm, diffused light that we couldn’t have designed better ourselves. We shot wide on the paths to let the landscape do its thing, then pulled in tight for the close, personal moments between the three of them.

Dad was completely relaxed, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work. No stiff posing, no forced smiles. Just a guy being goofy with his daughter while the sun dropped low behind the trees. Those are the frames that end up on the wall, every single time.

And then there was this moment. She just sat down on the gravel path, wildflowers framing both sides, and looked right at us. The sunset was doing that thing where everything goes warm and soft. We dropped low and fired. Sometimes a one-year-old gives you a better portrait than any adult could.

Kids at this age are unpredictable, and that’s exactly what makes it fun. One second she’s sprinting down the trail, the next she’s nestled into mom’s arms. We follow the energy wherever it goes. If you’re considering family photos in Madison, Cherokee Marsh is one of those spots we keep coming back to because it gives us variety without ever feeling crowded.

The last few frames of the evening were all three of them together, faces close, everyone laughing. That right there is the whole point. Not perfection. Connection.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Sessions at Cherokee Marsh

When is the best time for family photos at Cherokee Marsh?

We recommend booking about an hour before sunset. The trails at Cherokee Marsh face west, so you get beautiful, warm backlight as the sun goes down. Late summer and early fall are especially good because the grasses are tall and golden.
