Spring in Bloom: A Magnolia Blooms Engagement Session

Pink petals everywhere, warm light cutting through the branches, and two people who could not stop laughing. That’s what we walked into for this magnolia blooms engagement session at the UW Arboretum, and honestly, we never wanted it to end. The magnolia window in Madison is impossibly short. Maybe a week if you’re lucky. We hit it at the exact right moment, and this couple brought the kind of easy, playful energy that made every single frame feel effortless.

Catching the Magnolias at Their Peak

We always tell couples that spring Arboretum sessions are a gamble on timing. You can’t schedule peak bloom months in advance. You watch the trees, you watch the weather, and then you go. For this session, everything aligned. The magnolias were heavy with blossoms, petals drifting to the ground like confetti, and the light filtering through was soft enough that we barely needed to look for shade. That’s rare. We leaned into it hard.

What stood out about these two was how little direction they needed. They’d lean in, crack up about something only they understood, and we’d just keep shooting. The daffodil field gave us a completely different palette from the magnolias, all golden yellows against green, and the shift between locations kept the gallery dynamic. We pulled in tight for some of the quieter moments, the forehead touches and the way she’d reach for his face. Those frames tell you everything about who they are together.
