The Best Kind of Chaos: Mama With Her Daughters

Two curly-haired girls in floral crowns, a mama who could not stop laughing, and a backyard full of overgrown ferns and vintage quilts. This mama with her daughters session in Madison reminded us why we love shooting families who show up exactly as they are. No stiff poses, no forced smiles. Just the kind of loud, giggly energy that makes a gallery feel alive.

Floral Crowns, Fern Gardens, and Zero Chill

The setting here was something special. A private residence with an overgrown greenhouse frame, wild ferns creeping in everywhere, and light filtering through like it had been staged. It wasn’t. We just showed up at the right hour and the yard did the rest. That’s the thing about shooting at someone’s home: the backdrop already means something. That comfort translates straight through the lens.

We kept direction to a minimum. These girls had their own ideas, and honestly, their ideas were better than ours. One minute they’re leaning in for a sweet sister moment. The next they’re sticking out their tongues and cracking each other up. We stayed ready and let the chaos run. Those in-between frames are always the ones that end up on the wall.

Here’s what we always tell moms: get in front of the camera. Your kids are going to want to see you in these photos someday. Not just as the person holding the phone, but as the one laughing so hard your eyes are closed. The one squeezing them tight on a vintage quilt in the backyard. Mama with her daughters is one of our favorite session types for exactly that reason. The connection is immediate, unfiltered, and real. If you’re thinking about family portraits that actually feel like your life, this is what we mean.

Our studio lives inside Garver Feed Mill in Madison, but some of our favorite work happens in backyards like this one. Wherever your family feels most at home, that’s where the best photos happen.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Sessions at a Private Residence

Can Twig & Olive photograph a family session at my home instead of a park?

We love shooting at private residences. Your backyard, your front porch, the corner of your property with the best light. Home sessions feel relaxed because everyone is on familiar ground, and that comfort shows up in the photos. Just reach out and tell us about your space.

What should we wear to an outdoor family portrait session?

Coordinate, don’t match. Soft, earthy tones photograph beautifully, and layers add great texture on camera. Check out our client closet for pieces you can borrow for your session.
