Big Sister Energy at the Marsh: A Maternity and Family Session
She had opinions about the baby. She had opinions about where to stand. She had opinions about who got to hold mama’s hand. And honestly, that big sister energy made this maternity and family session one of the most fun we’ve photographed all year. We met this family at Cherokee Marsh right as the sun started dropping, and from the first frame it was clear: this little girl was running the show.
Golden Hour at Cherokee Marsh
We have a thing for Cherokee Marsh. Open prairies that stretch out in every direction, tall grasses catching late light, trails that curve just enough to give us new compositions every few steps. We timed this session for golden hour and it paid off. That warm, low sun wrapped around mama’s white dress and gave us soft, glowing light in nearly every frame. The kind of light you don’t have to chase because it finds you.
If you’re looking for a Madison spot that works for maternity portraits and a toddler who wants to run, this is it. There’s room for little ones to explore while we pull in close on the quieter moments between mom and dad. Open field meets lakeside trail, so every image feels different without ever leaving one location. We shot wide for the prairie backdrops and pulled in tight for the tenderness, because both tell the story.
The In-Between Moments
Including siblings in a maternity session always adds something you can’t replicate. Forehead touches. Belly kisses. The way this little girl looked at her mom like she already understood what was coming. Those are the frames we reach for. Not the perfectly posed ones, but the ones where everyone forgets we’re there. That shift from family energy to quiet connection between two parents about to become parents again is something we live for. Check out more of our maternity and family work here.
Is Cherokee Marsh a good location for maternity and family photos?
It’s one of our favorites in Madison. Open prairies and lakeside trails give us a range of backdrops within a short walk, and golden hour light here is consistently beautiful. It’s also toddler-friendly, which makes a big difference when siblings are part of the session.
