Real Life, Beautiful Light: A Neutral Colors Fall Session
Golden hour hit and this little guy took off running, and honestly, that’s when we knew this neutral colors fall session was going to be one of our favorites. The warmth in the light matched the warmth in this family, and Token Creek Park gave us the perfect backdrop to let it all unfold.
Let the Kids Lead
We always tell families the same thing: don’t worry about getting your kid to sit still. That’s not what we’re after. The sprints, the shoulder rides, the moments where a toddler decides he’s done posing and just wants to explore? That’s the good stuff. We pulled in tight for the close, quiet hugs and shot wide when dad hoisted his son onto his shoulders with the sun streaming through behind them.
The neutral tones this family chose were a photographer’s dream against the fall palette. Soft creams, warm tans, nothing competing with the landscape. When the wardrobe works with the environment instead of against it, every frame just clicks. If you’re planning a neutral colors fall session, take note: earth tones and golden hour are an unbeatable combination.
Token Creek has this great mix of open fields and wooded paths, which gave us variety without ever having to rush from one spot to the next. One minute we were in tall grass catching the last golden light, the next we were on a wooden bridge with dappled shade. That kind of range in a single park is something we look for every time we scout a location.
And then there were just the two of them. After the family frames, we always carve out a few minutes for the parents. These two were completely relaxed, standing close in the wildflowers with the light doing all the heavy lifting. No direction needed. We love ending a session like that. When is the best time for family photos at Token Creek Park?
We recommend booking about an hour before sunset for the best light. In early fall, that golden hour window fills the open fields with warm, directional light that’s flattering for everyone. Late September through mid-October also gives you beautiful foliage as a backdrop.
What should we wear to an outdoor fall family session?
Earth tones and neutrals work beautifully against fall colors. Creams, tans, soft greens, and muted rusts photograph well without competing with the landscape. We also have outfit inspiration available through our client closet if you want a hand putting looks together.
