The Heart of It All: October Golden Hour Session
Two boys in blazers, a field full of golden grass, and parents who could not stop laughing. This October golden hour session at Garver Feed Mill gave us the kind of fall evening that makes family photography feel effortless.
When Everyone Stops Performing
The light was doing exactly what we hoped it would. Low, warm, pouring sideways through the dry grass behind Garver. We led this family out to the field first because we knew the window was short, and it paid off. Every frame had that amber glow you only get for about twenty minutes in October.
What we loved about this family is how quickly they settled in. Dad cracked a joke, the boys went full chaos mode, and Mom just rolled with it. That’s the sweet spot for us. Posed portraits are fine, but the real gallery comes alive when a family stops performing and starts being themselves.
We pulled Mom and Dad away for a few frames on their own, and honestly, the way they looked at each other reminded us why couples portraits during a family session matter. It takes two minutes. The payoff is enormous.
Once the field light softened, we moved to the tree-lined path near the building. The red and orange canopy gave us a completely different palette, and we leaned into it. Close-ups of the boys, foreheads together. Mom holding both of them tight. These are the frames families come back to years later.
If you’re considering family photos in Madison, Garver Feed Mill gives you variety without having to drive between locations. Stone steps, open fields, tree canopy, brick texture. It’s all within a five-minute walk, and that matters when you’ve got little ones with limited patience.
When is the best time of year for golden hour family photos at Garver Feed Mill?
October is our favorite for golden hour sessions here. The sun sets earlier, which means golden light arrives at a kid-friendly hour. The fall color along the trails adds warmth to every frame without any extra effort.
