Rural Senior Session: Cedar Hill State Park
Denim, cowboy hats, and a weathered barn catching the last of the light. That’s the kind of detail that tells you a session is going to be good before you even fire the shutter. This rural senior session at Cedar Hill State Park in Texas gave us wide open, sun-soaked landscape we rarely get back home. We made the most of every frame.
Barns, Metal, and Wide Open Sky
Cedar Hill State Park sits on a ridge above Joe Pool Lake. The surrounding ranch land has this raw, lived-in character that photographs beautifully. Rusted corrugated sheds, old wooden barn walls, open fields stretching to the horizon. We didn’t have to style anything. The location did the heavy lifting.
What made this session stand out was her confidence. She showed up knowing exactly who she was, and that energy let us shoot loose and fast. We pulled in tight for a few quiet close-ups against the barn siding, then stepped way back to let the landscape breathe. That contrast is something we love building into a gallery. It gives you range.
If you’re a senior in the Dallas area, Cedar Hill State Park is worth exploring for rural senior portraits. The mix of textures here gives your gallery a look that feels completely different from a downtown backdrop. Weathered wood, open prairie, golden light. We’d come back in a heartbeat.
Traveling for senior sessions is one of our favorite things about this job. Every new place teaches us something. Every student brings a totally different energy. This one reminded us that sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Just good light, a great location, and someone ready to have fun.
Is Cedar Hill State Park a good location for senior pictures?
It’s a fantastic spot, especially if you want a rural feel with variety. The park and surrounding ranch land offer weathered barns, open fields, and wooded trails all within a short walk. Golden hour light here is warm and directional, perfect for portraits.
Does Twig & Olive photograph senior sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. We travel regularly for portrait sessions across the U.S. If you have a location in mind, reach out and let’s figure out the details. Some of our favorite galleries have come from places we’d never shot before.
