Wildflower Senior Session: Prairie Blooms at McCarthy Park

Three outfit changes, a meadow full of black-eyed Susans, and golden hour light that just would not quit. This wildflower senior session at McCarthy Youth and Conservation Park in Cottage Grove is the kind of evening we wish we could bottle up.

Summer Blooms, Golden Light, Zero Limits

McCarthy Park is one of those Dane County spots we keep coming back to. The reason is simple: native prairie. Tall grasses, wildflowers in every direction, and pockets of wooded shade that give us completely different backdrops within a few hundred feet. We shot wide through the meadow and pulled in tight among the blooms. Every frame felt like its own world.

What made this session stand out wasn’t just the location. It was the energy. She showed up with a plan: a floral dress for the woods, a blue ball gown for the open meadow, a gold number with baby’s breath for the last stretch of light. That kind of intention gives us so much to work with. We leaned into each look and let the landscape shift around her.

If you’re looking for a spot near Madison that doesn’t feel like everyone else’s senior photos, McCarthy Park belongs on your list. The conservation areas bloom from late June through August. That window is pure magic for portraits. We’ve shot here enough to know when the light drops behind the tree line and where the tallest blooms cluster. That familiarity lets us move fast and stay relaxed, which is exactly how our senior sessions are supposed to feel.

The last frames were our favorites. She was standing waist-deep in Queen Anne’s lace. The sun was almost gone. Everything had that warm, amber glow that makes wildflower senior portraits feel like a painting. We barely had to direct. She just moved, and we followed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Senior Sessions at McCarthy Park

When is the best time to book a wildflower senior session at McCarthy Park?

The native prairie wildflowers at McCarthy Park typically peak between late June and early August. We recommend booking during that window for the fullest blooms and richest color. Golden hour on a weekday evening is our go-to for the best light.

How many outfits can I bring to my senior portrait session?

Most of our seniors bring two to three outfits. McCarthy Park is perfect for that because the landscape shifts so much across the property. We build in time for changes so nothing feels rushed. Take a look at our senior portrait experience for more details.
