Joy Looks Good on You: Spring Sunset Portrait Session

Golden hour hit and this family just lit up. That’s the simplest way to describe our spring sunset portrait session at UW Arboretum, and honestly, it’s the best kind of session to photograph. Everyone showed up ready to play, and we showed up ready to chase the light.

Let the Kids Lead

We always tell families the same thing: just be yourselves. Chase each other. Tickle someone. Let the little ones run. The more natural the interaction, the better our images turn out. Stiff and posed is never the goal.

This crew made it easy. The kids had their own gravitational pull, constantly orbiting back to Mom and Dad for hugs and then launching off again. We pulled in tight for the quiet moments and shot wide when the energy picked up. That mix is what gives a gallery range.

The Arboretum is one of those locations we come back to again and again. There’s a stretch near the red flowering bushes where the light filters through at just the right angle during summer evenings. We timed this session for that window, and it paid off in every single frame.

If you’re considering the Arboretum for your own family photos, here’s what we’d tell you: book an evening session. The grounds empty out, the light turns warm and golden, and you get this incredible sense of space. It feels like the whole place is yours. That’s the kind of family photography we love delivering.

One of our favorite details from this session was the quiet couple portraits we grabbed while the kids explored nearby. Two minutes, no posing instructions, just the two of them leaning in. Those frames always end up being the ones parents come back to years later.

When is the best time for family photos at UW Arboretum?

We recommend booking an evening session about an hour before sunset. The light at the Arboretum is at its warmest and softest during golden hour, and the grounds are quieter, giving your family more room to move and play.
