Real Life, Beautiful Light: A Sunset Portrait Session with Pets

Golden light that just wouldn’t quit. That’s what we remember most about this sunset portrait session with pets in Helmond, Netherlands. The flat Dutch countryside stretched the evening out in a way we rarely get back home, and every direction we turned gave us something worth shooting. Two Bernese Mountain Dogs, a couple completely in love, wildflowers everywhere, and a sky that kept getting better.

Let the Dogs Do Their Thing

We always say it: the best portraits happen when everyone stops trying to look perfect. That goes double when pets are involved. These two Berners had their own agenda, and honestly, it made the whole session better. One minute they’re leaning into their people, the next they’re tearing across the field at full speed. We leaned into the chaos and let the energy carry us.

The connection between this couple was effortless. Forehead touches, tangled hands, the kind of laughter that doesn’t need a punchline. We pulled in close for those quiet moments because that’s where the real feeling lives. Then we’d step back and shoot wide to let the Dutch landscape do the talking. The contrast between intimate and expansive gave this gallery a range we love.

Shooting in the Noord-Brabant region was a gift. The light in the Netherlands that evening was soft, warm, and impossibly long. No skyscrapers, no tree lines cutting the horizon short. Just open field after open field catching every last bit of sun. If you’re planning a session somewhere in Europe and wondering whether it’s worth it, the answer is always yes. A landscape like this does half the work for us.

This is the kind of session that reminds us why we travel for portrait work. New light, new landscapes, and couples who are completely themselves. The dogs didn’t hurt either.
