Joy Looks Good on You: An 18 Month Milestone Session

Fall light, a rusty farm gate, a quilt spread out in the grass, and a toddler who wanted nothing to do with sitting still. This 18 month milestone session at McCarthy Youth and Conservation Park in Cottage Grove gave us the kind of frames we love most: unscripted, full of laughter, and completely real.

Connection Over Perfection

We tell every family the same thing before a session: don’t worry about getting it right. Just be together. This crew took that advice and ran with it. The toddler grabbed leaves off the ground, wandered toward the fence, made faces at us through the gate. Mom and Dad just rolled with it, and that’s when we got our favorite shots.

There’s something about the mix of textures at McCarthy Park that we really enjoy shooting against. Rusted metal, tall grass, warm quilts, golden leaves. It all layers together in a way that makes the images feel grounded. We pulled in tight for some of the candid moments and went wide when the fall color behind them was too good to crop out.

The best part of any family session is the moment everyone forgets we’re there. That’s when real connection shows up. A toddler reaching for a parent’s hand. Two people leaning their foreheads together while their kid does something hilarious between them. Those in-between moments are what we chase.

If you’re considering Cottage Grove for family photos, McCarthy Park is worth a look. It’s got open fields, tree lines, old farm structures, and enough variety that we never feel boxed in. Golden hour out here hits different.
