The Best Kind of Chaos: Austin Family Photos
Bluebonnets, golden hour, and a family that could not stop laughing. These Austin family photos at McKinney Falls State Park reminded us why we love what we do, even when we’re a thousand miles from our home base in Madison.
Wildflowers and Real Laughter
We met this crew at the edge of a Texas wildflower field right as the sun started dropping. The light was warm and low, pouring through the cedar trees, and these two kids brought the energy to match. Within five minutes, their parents were cracking up, the sister was twirling, and the brother was doing his best to play it cool. That’s the stuff we live for.
Every family has its own rhythm. Some are loud and physical. Some are quiet and tender. This family ran hot, and we leaned right into it. We shot wide to let the landscape do its thing, then pulled in tight when the real moments happened between them. A shoulder bump. An eye roll from big brother. Mom losing it over something Dad said.
If you’re considering family photos in the Austin area, this park delivers. The mix of rugged limestone, open fields, and those iconic Texas bluebonnets gives us so much to work with. And the golden hour light out here? It’s a completely different animal than what we get in Wisconsin. Warmer, thicker, almost amber.
We always tell families to just be themselves. Chase each other. Be ridiculous. The more natural the interaction, the better the gallery turns out. Posed and stiff is not what we’re going for, and this family understood that from the first frame. Take a look at our family photography portfolio to see more of what that approach looks like.
When is the best time of year for family photos at McKinney Falls State Park?
Spring is hard to beat. The bluebonnets and wildflowers peak from mid-March through mid-April, and the golden hour light pairs beautifully with the open fields. Fall is also a strong choice if you prefer warmer tones without the wildflower bloom.
Does Twig & Olive travel to Austin for family sessions?
We do. While our studio is based in Madison, Wisconsin, we travel regularly for family sessions across the country. Reach out and tell us what you’re thinking. We’ll figure out the details together.
