An Evening to Remember: Coastal Canyon Family Session
Golden hour light on a Southern California canyon trail, three kids who could not stop laughing, and a little Pomeranian stealing every scene. This coastal canyon family session at Crest Canyon Park in San Diego gave us the kind of evening we wish we could bottle up.
Let the Kids Lead
We tell every family the same thing: just be yourselves. Chase each other. Tickle someone. Let the little one ride on Dad’s shoulders if that’s where she wants to be. The real moments live in between the poses, and that’s exactly where we pointed our cameras all evening.
Crest Canyon has this beautiful mix of sandy trails, low brush, and warm sandstone that catches the last light perfectly. We shot wide to pull in the landscape and then came in close for the quiet stuff: a sister leaning into her mom, a dad grinning at something only he heard. If you’re considering family photography in San Diego, this park deserves a spot on your list.
The light along that canyon rim was soft and warm for a solid forty minutes. No harsh shadows, no squinting. Just clean, golden, wrap-around light that made our job easy. That kind of natural light is a photographer’s dream, and we leaned into it for every frame.
One thing we loved about this family: nobody needed direction. The kids were wild in the best way, and Mom and Dad just rolled with it. A spontaneous sprint down the trail turned into one of our favorite images of the night. That energy is exactly what we want in a family session.
We always make time for just the two of them. Once the kids are running free, we pulled Mom and Dad aside for a few frames on their own. The black and white walk along the hillside at dusk is one of those images that feels like it belongs on a wall.
Is Crest Canyon Park a good spot for family photos in San Diego?
It’s one of our favorites. The sandy trails, low coastal brush, and sandstone features give you variety without having to move far. The light during golden hour is consistently gorgeous, and the park is never overly crowded for sessions.
