A Coastal Family Session: Sand, Driftwood & Golden Light

Flower crowns, bare feet, and two girls who couldn’t stop giggling. That’s what we walked into for this coastal family session at Cannon Beach, and honestly, it set the tone for the entire evening. The Oregon Coast handed us the kind of light that makes our job feel effortless, and this family made every frame count.

From the Forest to the Shore

We started in the pine woodland just off the trail. Dappled light filtered through the canopy, and the whole scene felt like something out of a storybook. The girls led the way, holding hands, spinning around, completely in their own world. We pulled in tight for those moments because that’s where the real stuff lives.

Then the driftwood. Cannon Beach is covered in it, these massive bleached logs piled up at the tree line. The sisters climbed up, sat down, and the older one leaned over to kiss her little sister on the cheek. We didn’t ask for that. We just caught it. Those unscripted seconds are what we’re always chasing.

If you’re considering family photography at Cannon Beach, know this: the variety is incredible. Forest, driftwood, open sand, tide pools. All within walking distance. We shot wide on the beach to let the landscape do its thing, and the wet sand reflecting that golden light gave us something almost surreal. It’s the kind of location that does half the work for you.

By the end, the sun was sitting right on the water and the whole beach turned gold. We let the family just wander, play, exist in it. No poses. No redirects. That’s when we do our best work, when everyone forgets we’re even there. If you’re looking for a family session that actually feels like your family, that’s what we’re here for.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Photography at Cannon Beach

When is the best time for a family session at Cannon Beach?

Late spring through early fall offers the longest golden hour windows and the mildest weather. We recommend booking about an hour and a half before sunset so we have time to explore the forest trails, driftwood, and open beach while the light is at its best.

Do you travel to Oregon for family sessions?

We do. Our studio is in Madison, Wisconsin, but we photograph families wherever the adventure takes us. Reach out and tell us where you’re thinking. We’ll make it work.
