The Heart of It All: A Coastal Sunset Family Session

Golden hour hit and this family just came alive. Flower crowns, bare feet, two little girls running full speed through tall grass with the Oregon coastline glowing behind them. This coastal sunset family session at Cannon Beach was one of those evenings where everything lined up. We barely had to direct a thing.

Let Kids Be Kids, and Get Out of the Way

We always tell families the same thing before a session: just be yourselves. Play, laugh, chase each other. The more natural the interaction, the better the photos. Posed and stiff is never what we’re going for. This crew needed zero convincing. The two sisters were tickling each other, kissing dad’s cheeks, spinning through the clearing like they owned the place. Our job was to keep up.

The light on the Oregon coast that evening was unreal. Warm, low, wrapping around everything it touched. We shot wide through the tall grass to catch the glow. Then we pulled in tight for the quiet moments: foreheads touching, a toddler grinning up at her dad with the Pacific behind them. That range is what makes family photography so rewarding for us.

Why Cannon Beach Works So Well for Families

If you’re considering an Oregon family session, Cannon Beach gives you options most locations can’t. We started in a grassy clearing surrounded by tall trees. From there we moved to a wooded trail, then finished on the bluffs overlooking Haystack Rock. Three completely different backdrops within a short walk. Your gallery tells a story instead of repeating the same scene ten times.

These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No one was watching the clock. The kids set the pace. And the final frame of the night? Dad and his littlest one touching foreheads with the ocean stretched out below. You can’t plan a moment like that. You just have to be ready for it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Photography at Cannon Beach

When is the best time for family photos at Cannon Beach?

We recommend booking about an hour before sunset for the best golden hour light. Spring and early fall tend to have the clearest skies, but the Oregon coast looks gorgeous in nearly every season. Overcast days work beautifully too, since the clouds soften light and eliminate harsh shadows.
