Birthday Golden Hour: A Couple’s Sunset Session at George Wyth
Seven years together, a birthday to celebrate, and a sky that looked like it was showing off just for them. This couple’s sunset session at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo, Iowa was one of those evenings where everything aligned. The light was warm and low, the wildflowers were at peak bloom, and these two were completely at ease with each other.
The Kind of Light You Can’t Fake
George Wyth gave us open meadows, wildflowers, and a sunset that just kept getting better. We positioned them in a clearing where the light filtered through at a low angle, and the whole scene turned gold. That’s the kind of moment we chase as photographers. No reflectors, no flash. Just the real thing.
She wore this incredible crochet cardigan over a blue dress, and the colors played off the warm tones of the field perfectly. He kept making her laugh between frames. We barely had to direct anything. When a couple has seven years of history, you can feel it in the way they move around each other. Our job was just to be ready.
Iowa doesn’t always get the credit it deserves for portrait locations, but George Wyth is genuinely beautiful. If you’re looking for open sky, water views, and natural texture without a crowd, this park delivers. We’d shoot here again in a heartbeat. Is George Wyth State Park a good location for couples photos?
It really is. The park has open meadows, lake views, and wooded trails that give you a variety of backdrops in one session. Golden hour here is especially stunning because the flat terrain lets you chase the light across wide open fields.
Does Twig & Olive travel to Iowa for portrait sessions?
We do. We travel throughout the Midwest and beyond for couples, engagement, and anniversary sessions. Reach out and tell us where you’re thinking, and we’ll make it happen.
