Sunshine and Sweet Chaos: A Summer Family Session
Long summer light, bare feet in the grass, and a family that showed up ready to just be themselves. That’s exactly what this summer family session at Garver Feed Mill gave us, and we loved every frame.
Let the Kids Run
We tell every family the same thing before we start: don’t worry about us. Play. Laugh. Chase each other. The camera will find the moments worth keeping. This crew took that to heart immediately, and it showed. The kids were running circles, the parents were cracking up, and we were right there in the middle of it pulling frames that felt alive.
Garver Feed Mill gives us a mix we really appreciate for family photography in Madison. There’s the building itself with its warm brick and clean lines, and then right outside you get open fields and soft, scattered light filtering through the tree line. We shot wide to showcase those grounds, then pulled in tight for the quiet stuff: foreheads together, little hands grabbing dad’s face, a look between the two of them that said everything.
If you’re considering a family session here, late summer is the sweet spot. The light stays golden for what feels like hours, and the grounds are lush without being overgrown. We’ve shot at Garver dozens of times and it never gets old. The mix of textures, the way the evening sun wraps around the east side of the building, the fact that kids have room to move without us chasing them into a parking lot. It just works.
These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No stiff posing, no forced smiles. Just a family being a family while we moved around them catching what was real. The best images almost always come from the in-between, the seconds nobody thinks matter. Those are the ones that end up on the wall.
When is the best time of year for a family session at Garver Feed Mill?
Late summer and early fall are our favorites. The light stays warm and golden well into the evening, and the grounds around the building are green and full. We typically schedule sessions about an hour before sunset to make the most of that window.
