Two kids who could not stop laughing, a baby on the way, and a sky that kept threatening rain without ever following through. This family and maternity session at McCarthy Park had the kind of energy we never get tired of: real, loud, and full of love. Overcast light softened everything. It turned that golden prairie grass into something cinematic. We showed up for a session and walked away thinking about it for days.
Let the Kids Lead
The older two set the tone before we even had a camera up. Brother and sister cracking each other up on a leaf-covered trail, completely oblivious to us. We pulled in tight for those sibling frames because that kind of laughter is impossible to stage. You either catch it or you don’t. Our job is to be ready when it happens.
McCarthy Youth & Conservation Park gives you wooded trails, open prairie, and rustic farm structures all within a short walk. That variety is a gift for us as photographers. One minute we were shooting along a canopy of autumn trees. A few hundred feet later the landscape opened into wide golden fields under a sky full of drama. Cloud cover kept the light soft but saturated, which is exactly what we look for in Cottage Grove maternity sessions.
There’s always a moment where the couple stops thinking about the camera. For these two, it happened in the tall grass. Mom knelt down to touch noses with her son. Nobody prompted that. We shot wide to hold the scale of the prairie against such a small, tender gesture. That frame ended up being one of our favorites from the entire evening. We closed things out with the whole family together. The kids gravitated to mom’s belly completely on their own. That kind of unscripted connection is what we chase in every session.
