Warmth and Wonder: A Late Summer Sunset Session

That last stretch of summer light does something different. It’s lower, warmer, and it turns an open field into something that feels almost cinematic. This late summer sunset session near Garver Feed Mill was one of those evenings where the sky just cooperated from start to finish, and this family of five brought exactly the kind of energy we love to photograph.

Let Them Be Loud

We told these guys the same thing we tell every family: just be yourselves. Tickle someone. Chase someone. Pick somebody up and spin them around. The more real the interaction, the better the photos turn out. Posed and stiff doesn’t give us anything worth framing.

And these three? They delivered. The oldest had this quiet confidence in front of the camera. The little guy in overalls was pure joy. And the girl in that red dress and bonnet, standing alone in the tall grass, gave us one of those frames you can’t plan for. We pulled in tight on each of them because their individual personalities were too good not to spotlight.

Then there were the parents. We always carve out a few minutes for just the two of them, and it’s worth it every single time. The light was doing its thing, the wildflowers were catching that golden backlight, and they were completely relaxed. Honestly, that is when we do our best work.

If you’re thinking about family photography in Madison, late summer is one of our favorite windows. The fields near Garver Feed Mill go golden, the light hangs around longer, and kids can run without worrying about heavy coats or mud. It’s the sweet spot.

That last frame, the black and white of the toddler on the path, stopped us during editing. Sometimes the simplest image says the most. No props, no posing, just a kid being a kid on a beautiful evening. That’s the whole point.
