Warmth and Wonder: Madison Family Photos
Late fall light has this golden, almost amber quality that you can’t manufacture, and when a family shows up relaxed and ready to just be themselves, everything clicks. That’s exactly what happened with these Madison family photos at McCarthy Youth & Conservation County Park in Cottage Grove.
The Little Things Are the Big Things
McCarthy Park is one of those quiet Dane County gems that most people drive right past. The trails wind through open prairie and wooded stretches, and in November the whole place takes on this warm, muted palette that practically begs to be photographed. We shot wide through a lot of this session to let the landscape do its thing, and it paid off.
We always tell families to just be themselves. Play, laugh, tickle, chase. Posed and stiff is never what we’re going for, and this crew understood the assignment from the first frame. The kids were all energy, the parents were relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work.
Our favorite frames from this session aren’t the ones where everyone is looking at the camera. They’re the ones where someone just said something funny, or a kid buried their face into mom’s shoulder, or dad picked everyone up at once. Those are the photos that end up on the wall five years from now. If you’re considering a family session at a Dane County park, McCarthy is worth putting on your list.
Late fall sessions have a limited window, and we timed this one for that last stretch of golden hour. The light wrapped around this family in a way that felt effortless. No reflectors, no flash. Just the good stuff.
When is the best time of year for family photos at McCarthy Park?
Late fall is stunning here. The prairie grasses turn gold and the tree canopy thins out, giving you beautiful, warm light throughout the trails. Spring and early summer work well too, but November has a quality of light that’s hard to beat.
