Coastal Adventure: New Zealand Couple’s Portraits
Wind off the water, dramatic clouds stacking over the coast, and two people completely at ease with each other. These New Zealand couple’s portraits at Mount Maunganui are the kind of session we think about long after we’ve delivered the gallery. The landscape did most of the heavy lifting, but this couple brought an energy that made every single frame feel alive.
Cliffs, Coast, and the Best Kind of Light
Mount Maunganui is one of those places that stops you cold. Rugged coastline, crashing surf, green clifftop trails that drop straight into the Pacific. We spent the session moving between the garden paths near the base and the rocky overlooks higher up, and every turn gave us a completely different backdrop. The light shifted constantly as clouds rolled through, which kept us on our toes and honestly made the images more interesting than a clear sky ever would have.
What we loved about these two is that they were game for anything. Climbing rocks, walking through windswept grass, standing still at the cliff’s edge while the ocean roared below. That willingness to just be in the moment is when we do our best work. No stiffness, no posing for the sake of posing. Just them, in a place that felt bigger than both of them. We pulled in tight for the quieter moments and shot wide when the landscape demanded it, and the mix gives this gallery a range that still makes us proud.
Shooting New Zealand portrait photography like this reminds us why we said yes to travel work in the first place. A coast this wild, light this unpredictable, and a couple this relaxed is a combination you don’t forget. If you’re considering a session somewhere off the beaten path, whether it’s New Zealand or somewhere closer to home, we’d love to talk about it. Take a look at our couples portfolio to see more of the work we’re most proud of.
Is Mount Maunganui a good location for couples portraits?
It’s incredible. The coastline offers everything from dramatic rocky cliffs to soft garden paths near the base of the mount. Light changes constantly with the coastal weather, which gives us a wide range of looks in a single session. We recommend timing it for late afternoon when the sun drops lower over the water.
Does Twig & Olive photograph couples sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. We’ve shot couples sessions across the U.S. and internationally, including New Zealand and Australia. If you have a location in mind, reach out and let’s figure out the details together.
