The Best Kind of Chaos: One Year Milestone Session

She showed up in a red polka dot dress, and within about thirty seconds she was off. Walking, wobbling, grabbing fistfuls of grass, grinning at everyone and no one. This one year milestone session was exactly the kind of beautifully unpredictable hour we live for.

When a One Year Old Runs the Show

There’s a rhythm to milestone sessions that’s completely different from anything else we shoot. The kid is in charge. Full stop. Our job is to stay close, stay ready, and catch the moments between the chaos. The wobble-walks, the sudden fascination with a leaf, the way she’d look back at her parents with this huge grin. That’s the stuff we’re after.

We timed this session for golden hour, and it paid off. That warm, late light wrapped around her in every outfit change. It caught the fuzz on her little knit hat and turned the dry grass into something almost painterly. Golden hour with a one year old is a gamble because you’re working fast. But when the light hits right, the frames practically make themselves.

The floral crown was a great call. It stayed on just long enough for us to get the shots we needed. Honestly, the moments where she was reaching for it were just as good as the posed ones. If you’re planning family portraits in the Madison area, props like this add personality without overcomplicating things. Keep it simple. Let the kid lead.

The Cake Smash

And then there was cake. We pulled in close for this part because the expressions are everything. The first tentative touch of frosting. The moment she realized it tasted good. Then the full commitment that followed. Her face told the whole story, and we caught every bit of it. These are the images that end up framed, not because they’re polished, but because they’re real.

The first year changes everything. A one year milestone session is our way of stopping the clock for just a second. Right at the age when everything is new and moving fast. We photograph these sessions at our studio inside Garver Feed Mill and at outdoor locations around Madison. Either way, the goal is the same: let your kid be exactly who they are. We’ll handle the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions about Milestone Sessions in Madison

When is the best time to schedule a one year milestone session?

We recommend booking within a few weeks of your child’s first birthday. At this age, development moves fast. Even a month makes a big difference in what they can do. We’ll work with you to find a date and time that lines up with golden hour and your little one’s best mood window.

Can I include a cake smash in my child’s milestone session?

Absolutely. Cake smashes are one of our favorite parts of a milestone session. You bring the cake (simple designs with real frosting work best), and we’ll set up the scene. Reach out to us and we can talk through the details.
